Writing with 5 Minute Friday’s prompt: Potential

Whenever I think of the word “Potential” I think of there being a hope for something, something in the future.  Potential means the possibilities are there, it just hasn’t been realised yet, it hasn’t happened, but it could.

I just opened my kitchen drawer and there are several seed-packets there.  I bought them but haven’t made time for gardening since – so these seeds sit in my kitchen drawer – full of potential.  There is potential – the hope, the ability, the expectation even for masses of flowers – but potential isn’t the only thing that is needed.

Potential is dormant until it is fed and given opportunity to grow.

While these seeds sit in my kitchen drawer those seeds will never reach their potential.

Potential is only the start – like all plants, these seeds need air, water, nutrients, and sunlight, in order for that potential (that hope and possibility and ability) to bloom.

We are like those seeds – our children are like those seeds.  God has created in each one of us potential. He has created in us the ability to do certain things – but unless those abilities are are given air, water, nutrients and sunlight – we won’t grow, those abilities won’t bloom.

Three things we need to do to let our potential (and our kids potential) grow into its fullness:

  1. Recognise the strengths, abilities, talents God has given us
  2. Practice those things:  from little things big things grow!
  3. Be around people who encourage and support us (like the sunshine to the seed)

Thinking back to those seeds in my kitchen drawer – the biggest thing that is holding them back from reaching their full potential is my busyness.

This can be a warning for us as well.  A warning to our own potential being limited by our busyness – by being distracted by good opportunities, maybe and not giving enough time to the God opportunities.  By being occupied by doing what the world expects of us, instead of standing true to what God has put on our heart, things that line up with His purposes for our life.

The warning can also be for us as parents – are we too busy doing all the things that we don’t have time to nurture the little seeds of potential in our kids.

Potential is dormant until it is fed and given opportunity to grow.

Potential is only the start… what are you going to do with that potential is the question.

5 Minute Friday - Potential. We all have potential but do we let it grow into fruit. This is the challenge for us as adults but also for us as parents.

Well, that’s the end of my 5 minutes of writing.

*5 Minute Friday is all about writing for 5 minutes on a given prompt – no editing.

But since this ties in with a workshop I led this week, so I’ll share my Instagram post about that as well.

Each of us are created unique – not only do we have a unique fingerprint but what motivates us, and what we are good at makes us unique from each other as well. Do you know your strengths? Do you know your weaknesses? To be honest we are more inclined to be comfortable talking about our weaknesses than our strengths.

But God has given us strengths, talents, passions. When we start to understand this part of who we are, of how we have been created we start to find purpose and joy in the opportunities in front of us.

Yesterday I lead a discussion with teen girls and their mums about finding your strengths. We did a test and talked about different things that stop us from being who we have been created to be. I found the teen one at Thrively and the one for adults at High5Test – both free).

Girls started to see that they were:

Assertive – that standing up for what is right is important to them.

Creative Thinking – that they are good at thinking outside the box and finding solutions.

Flexible – that they handle change well.

Leadership – that they are visionary and inspire others.

And the list went on.

We talked about the danger of limiting belief – believing things that we’ve been told, or we’ve told ourselves that stop us from doing the things we are really able to do. Jon Acuff calls them ‘secret rules’ – rules we let guide our life – We tell ourselves we can’t do this because …..{insert secret rule} … – is that really so? Who says so?

We also talked about comparisons. Whenever we compare ourselves with someone else we are always less. Emily Freeman says we have the choice to compete or connect with others. We can use our strengths to connect, collaborate, encourage others – not to compete with them in some imaginary race of life.

We talked about our need to take what God has given us, and put it to use and grow stronger in those things.  We were reminded of the story of the talents in the Bible – and though the parable is talking about money the application can be any resource that God gives us – and our strengths, our abilities is a resource He has given us.

It was a great afternoon and I hope the mums and daughters went home talking about little insights they saw into who they are – and then jump from there to talking about what they can do to encourage each other to build on their strengths – and to help each other stamp out those limiting beliefs that stop us from shining.

What are your thoughts on “potential”?

Do you feed and water your potential seeds?  And your children’s?

Enjoyed the lesson you drew from seeds. I am a gardener also–and a grandma who can take time to nurture the grandchildren. I am so thankful for God’s design of the family–the potential for nurture. I’m your neighbor at FMF.
