Keeping Christ in Christmas can be just a catch phrase that Christians use to make celebrating Christmas ‘ok’. Or it can be a hearts desire to use this time where our society celebrates to reflect Christ, his love and purpose for people. Here are 10 ideas that we have used over time to help our family focus on loving God and loving others at Christmas time.
1–Have Christ in your everyday already. Making Christ a part of Christmas is simply a continuation of Christ being a part of your life already. If he isn’t, then now is a good time to invite him into your life – He’ll give meaning to the rest of your life!
2–Use your family devotion time to focus on the birth of Christ and the meaning for us today. We’ve used theme studies such as
- Names of Christ
- Jesse Tree
- Advent calendars
3–Find Bible Memory verses that are pertinent to Christ’s coming
- Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
- Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Luke 1:46-48 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. (you could learn the whole song of Mary)
4–Set up a Nativity scene where it is well seen in your house – making a statement that Christmas in your house is about Christ.
5–Be involved in the Community – showing the face of Jesus (once again this should be a year round thing, but the community does makes special opportunity at this time of year)
- Singing carols
- Visiting nursing homes and hospital wards
- Serving in needy areas
6–Read the Christmas story (Jesus’ birth) before anything else happens on Christmas morning – Start your Christmas Day with worship – with focusing on who God is and what he has done for you.
7–Fill your house with worship music – not just the traditional Christmas Carols
8–Watch a movie that portrays the true Christmas Story or makes you think about your beliefs about Christ
- The Nativity Story
- The Star
9–Make an Advent calendar (count down) more about Jesus and our heart for him than about ‘getting’. Keep our hearts in this time about Jesus not the presents we are going to receive – it is about us receiving Christ and giving to others.
10–Share with others – share God’s love (in that He came as a baby and died), share his blessings (such as a meal, a gift, a visit)
