Yesterday was our Naomi’s 16th birthday. Every birthday I write a letter to my children and create a poster featuring my heart for them for the coming year. My prayer for Naomi this year is that she will seek after wisdom. That in the midst of her desire to learn she will seek God first, that she will get to know God, know him better, know him more and from that relationship, live wisely.
James 1:5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. (NLV)
When Naomi was 6 months old she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour – which was a tumour on her kidney. We travelled to Perth for it to be removed and then there was the 5 months of chemo treatment to follow. God provided for us in so many ways during that time – from someone to look after Josh and Jess whenever we had to travel to the city, to friends able to host us, and look after as while we were in Perth, to Christian nurses who prayed with us (on the quiet since they aren’t allowed to pray with their patients in person), to people to help us with our travel arrangements, amazingly (or thanks to God) the doctor I happened to see locally was known by the Children’s hospital so we were able to have some treatments here at town and some in Perth. Her prognosis was always very good – and to be honest, at times I felt like a fraud as she was a happy content baby – she was known at the smiley baby on the Oncology ward – and still remembered for that 10 years later!
She has had complications with internal scar tissue which has created more pain and lifestyle implications than the original tumour. She has always been strong and brave, relying on God to give her the strength to cope with the intense pain. Though she has asked many times, “Why me?”, she has quickly reverted to thanking God for being with her and helping her.
As I said, she was a smiley, happy, content baby, even in the midst of hospital visits, and doctors prodding and poking. Little did we know the personality she would grow into – she continues to be someone who brings joy into a room, who delights in making people laugh and have a good time.
We have loved seeing her creativity grow – she paints, recycles, acts and does things simply different than you would think!
She has a heart for people, an ability to lift the energy in a room, and to see the kid on the outskirts and help them join in.
She has a desire to learn – to know things.
She has a heart to know God’s ways and walk in them.
We love you Naomi – you are an amazing girl – and we watch with anticipation what adventures you’ll drag us through this coming year!
