The older our kids get the harder it is to define the ‘learning’ that happens in everyday life. Often it is a practicing of the things they already know, a stretching to think, a prompting to act. Living is as important as learning. I think sometimes we focus on the learning and yet if we don’t live then where does all the learning go?
So today isn’t so much about learning – but more about living …
Today was about getting ready for Jessica’s party tomorrow. Jess and I went through the menu and wrote a shopping list. We also planned the rest of the weekend meals. Then we went to town to do the shopping and run-around chores.
Meanwhile Hayley studied. Josh and Jacob took the day off from studies and played war games and strategy games. Daniel worked with his animation project and the laundry chores (a big job to keep going through the morning). Naomi opened a new scanner, read all the instructions and started scanning photos of Jessica’s younger years (pre-digital!)
Lunch was a bit of a free-for-all, cleaning out left overs from the fridge. The kids all played a card game together while I had a nap. When I woke up Hayley was studying again, Jess was working on the computer and the others were on the wii. Nomi suddenly realised she had planned to sew (how easy it is to be distracted) so she went off to finish off a few hats she is making for gifts.
Late evening Daniel went and helped Peter put together a fan for the veranda. Apparently Daniel was the one who worked out where things were going wrong and how to do it right. Well done Daniel!
Friday night is usually our ‘family night’ where we are relaxed and either play games or watch a dvd. Since this was the last opportunity to sit with our visitors we sat around the table. After dinner activity will be more wii.
Here are a few of the baby photos of our darling Jess.
