Do your kids have a signature?  Mine don’t.  Some of mine can’t even write in cursive yet.  It hasn’t been something I have pushed though we are slowly working on it.

Last night we spent our family night filling in passport forms in preparation for our trip overseas.  What fun!!  While doing so we learnt that kids over 10 need to sign for themselves (though parents need to verify as well.)  So a big part of our evening was for the kids to find how they wanted to sign their name and practice.

We also discussed initials – as that is another official signature that they need to develop.

I had never thought of this before – had you?  One good reason to still teach cursive is that eventually our kids need to have a signature – even in this digital world.

Pete and I reminisced the days when we practised our signature as kids.  Pete confessed he practised his during the sermons at church (we all decided, kids as well, that this wasn’t a good role model!!)   They’ll be practising all weekend and then we’ll get the forms finalised.

Though this is about signatures, the question of the value of learning cursive is closely related – do you teach cursive?

We are an American Military Family. In the military at the age of 10 you get a military identification card. My children had to sign those. While they were signing the guy told us you would be surprised how many kids at 10 could not do it. Soon after getting their ID cards my children also had to fill out their passport paper work because we move to a foreign country.

Can you tell me if your children’s signatures have changed over time? I am guessing this doesn’t really cause a problem as ID’s and Passports can be reissued but it is something we were thinking about?

My girls used to practice their signature once they started to learn cursive (I think it’s a girl thing) but my boys have struggled a little with cursive and as such, never done great with a signature. However, getting out and about in the community means that they have had cause to sign their name using a signature so it has naturally been something that we have had to practice.

I start by just getting them to write their name in cursive. Very basic. I encourage them to stick with fairly basic and eventually their own individual signature style will be revealed. I know others teach fancy loops and some quirky things as a way to distinguish individual styles but I believe that will come naturally.

My in-laws think I’m nuts, because I started teaching my kids how to write their names as soon as they could hold crayons. Our oldest daughter has daily handwriting practice; it’s just printing now, but in a couple of years, she’ll be ready to tackle cursive, and we’ll expect her to sign her name on things like thank-you notes.
