“Now the Bereans were of more noble character … for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Acts 17:11
The Bereans, a small group of scholars were commended for their attitude towards what they were taught – they checked anything they heard against the Word of God before believing. This is the model for our learning today – everything – every belief, every theory, every standard needs to be checked against the Word of God. Does it measure up?
Being like a Berean is not to make us critical and arrogant, refusing to accept instruction. If we take the example from the Bible they eagerly received teaching, they just wanted to make sure it lined up with the Scriptures.
One goal that we have for our children is to be life-long learners, to love learning and to be able to think independently about any subject. We want each of our children to pursue knowledge and wisdom about God’s creation but even more so about the Creator. Though the world may have dismissed the Bible as a relevant text for learning, for the Christian it remains a true source for all learning.
I am writing 31 days of Heart Conversations to document 31 important truths I want to make sure I pass onto my children. Is today’s topic something you want to talk to your kids about? Do it today! Your words may well be different than mine but these truths will shape our children’s lives forever.
