Sometimes parenting can get overwhelming: there is so much to do, so much to be aware of, all at the same time! Invariably we miss something, we stuff up, we don’t do as well as we wanted to. As always we have two choices – we can dwell on our mistakes or we can look for a fresh start.

There are three fresh starts that we can make work for us:

1–After the next meal: When my kids were little and stuff happened and I didn’t respond how I wanted to, when I came to my senses, I would hug ‘em, and feed ‘em, and start again! Meal times are great dividers in our day; when we sit, or the kids are quiet because they are eating (make it food that they’ll eat happily!), we can take a deep breath, and make a plan for the next part of our day. A fresh start.

2–After the next nap: I loved those years when my kids had a nap- or as they grew older it grew into rest time, and then reading time, and then time by yourself. These times where another marker in my day where I could change the direction of my attitude or my actions, and in turn this would change the atmosphere in my home once everyone was up and at it again. A fresh start.

3–After the next sunrise: Going to bed, and getting a good nights sleep will always give us a fresh look at the day and all that we have to do. We need to look after ourselves, when life gets overwhelming we often stay up at night thinking we are catching up, reality is we need sleep!

These times in our day are really just hooks that give me a time in my day where I shake myself up, realign my thinking, my actions, and redirect my plan for the day with my kids. Ultimately our fresh start comes from knowing that Jesus died for all my sins, once and for all, that God sees me clean, and that I have the Holy Spirit to help me do all that Jesus taught.

One of the biggest things we have to fight against when we stuff up is the guilt; guilt that we’ve not done what we should have done, guilt that we knew better, guilt that we’ve been here before – guilt.  Guilt is a lie that Satan whispers in our ear to distract us from the love and truth that Jesus offers.

We often get so focused on us as the parent, that we forget that there is an ‘us’ as a person. This person is on a journey with God, a journey where the Spirit is changing me. As a person you will have to grow and mature with self-control, orderliness, timeliness, diligence etc…. Your role as mum or dad will give you plenty of opportunities to learn and practice these godly responses. Give yourself the same considerations you give your kids when they stuff up, or the same encouragements you would give your friend when they talk about their failures – not excusing the things we do wrong, but moving on. With the forgiveness and grace of Jesus, you can have a fresh start, right now.
