The Mum Heart Conference 2016 is almost here. And yes, I’ll be flying across the country – all day and into the night to get there. The only difference for me this year is that I don’t need to do any prep for those left at home as my kids are all big enough to look after themselves! This is the fourth time I’ve made the conference and each year I look forward to it.
The Mum Heart Conference is a time where Christian homeschool mums are encouraged and built up. It is a combination of retreat and professional development. And it has been a privilege to be involved from the start. I was the key speaker for the first conference where I shared the idea on homeschooling with a heart focus. This year I’m presenting an elective on making character training a part of every day life.
But my homeschool journey is almost done. I’ve been homeschooling now for over 18 years, my youngest is in year 11 – his path is set and my focus is on finishing well; giving him a strong finish. As our homeschooling journey comes to a close I have been asking myself, and God, what’s next? All through our homeschooling years I’ve tried to encourage mums, those who homeschool, as well as those who don’t, but now that my kids are all older teens and young adults – what now? The answer remains the same – encourage women.
So this is the real reason I fly across the country for Mum Heart Conference is that I want to be an encouragement to Mums.
My passion is for homeschool mums to see that it is about heart, not school. That homeschooling is simply a part of our role as parent – that as a parent we are to teach and train the whole child. A homeschooling family has the opportunity to do that, day in and day out – it is a privilege and a responsibility.
I also love the idea of having a retreat – a time where mums can recharge; Mums need to learn to look after themselves. Even though getting away for a weekend is hard work, there is so much to do, especially when we have young kids, but once we get there it is worth it. Mums often see themselves as one dimension – mums/wives – and yet we are as multi-faceted, and gifted, as our children are. Sometimes we need to be reminded of that.
It really doesn’t matter where you are at in your journey – starting or finishing, going strong or flailing, purposeful or confused, convinced or questioning – the Mum Heart conference is a refreshing and fun place, full of energy and vibe, as well as compassion and understanding. (And this is another reason why I make an effort to get there.) In meeting people and encouraging people, I myself am encouraged in my own journey.
The Mum Heart Conference has come out of a connection and love for Sally Clarkson – who has written many books encouraging the heart of mothers. I am proud to be a part of this initiative here in Australia that builds on her heart.
My prayer for all who come to the Mum Heart Conference 2016 is that they find peace and compassion, that they are encouraged (given courage to go on). That people make friends – and stay in touch. That every mum who comes laughs and enjoys herself. That we find answers to questions, or at least hope that there are answers. That we are refreshed in body, soul and spirit.
I look forward to this weekend – and if you are there – please look for me and say hello. I’d love to have a chat!
P.S. Use #mumheartconference on your Instagram photos as you head to the conference and I’ll meet you there too!
