Last weekend, was Daniel’s 15th birthday.  We celebrated with pancakes for breakfast, then spent the morning at the local markets catching up with friends, then in the evening we went to the drive-in to see the Lego Movie.  And yes, we’ve been singing “everything is awesome” ever since!   Sunday, after church, the kids had some friends over for the afternoon to watch a movie.

Monday was our first day back at studies.  Daniel’s study hasn’t changed since last term, but Naomi’s has.  Over the last few months Naomi has indicated that she may want to go to university at some stage, so we tweaked some of her studies to prepare her for that pathway.  I spent time with her on Monday setting up a new course and she then continued with her independent studies after that.

Tuesday was an interrupted day as we had friends arriving for a few nights  though the kids did study in the morning (and we resumed our Bible study lessons).  After lunch  Daniel and Naomi helped me with the grocery shop while Josh and Jess stayed home to be the welcoming committee.

Wednesday was a ‘free’ day of sorts (no formal studies).  I took Daniel into town to buy some wood for a project he wants to make in the shed.  It was good to see him interacting with the young man who was very helpful at the hardware store.  Daniel both stood up for what he had thought as well as listened to advice and encouragement.  Looking forward to seeing the completed project.  Once Daniel came home, he managed his time between playing a game with the big boys (his brother and friend) and mowing our lawn.

Wednesday night we celebrated Joshua’s 21st with our friends while they were with us.  We wanted to have a nice dinner party out on the lawn but it was too muggy so we stayed indoors.  After dinner the big kids played a game of Settlers and the adults had a catch up before heading to bed a long time earlier than our teens!

Thursday we said goodbye to our friends – though Joshua’s friend is staying for a week.  The girls had Mainly Music and a few chores around town.  Daniel spends Thursday morning tidying up our yard and then Josh and his friend Jacob took him into town for a small lawn mowing job a friend had asked him to do.   I had an hour or so at home, completely by myself!  It was a nice little breather.  After lunch Naomi spent time on her art and piano.  The girls are getting back into their music after a month or so break.

Friday we looked at Discretion – which is the topic of the kids club the kids were involved in a few weeks back, so they have looked at this character trait with little kids in mind, now it is time to look at it with their own lives in mind.  We discussed choices and seeing the consquences.  I hope to use these words: discretion, choice, consequences, over the next few weeks to help the kids be aware of their responsibility to make wise choices.  This ties in with my newsletter this weekend:  Ultimately, their Call.  We also picked up our Geometry read aloud, String, Straight-edge, & Shadow which lead into a discussion on Astrology and Astronomy.  Great to have these discussions with my kids!  The rest of the morning was spent on their individual studies.  The afternoon was their own to do as they pleased.

Friday night we watched “Frozen” for the first time for our family movie night.  We all thoroughly enjoyed it and I will pick up some of the themes and analogies to discuss over Sunday breakfast.

This week Daniel was cook’s help which means he had the opportunity to cook a few meals (Home Ec).  He cooked a savoury rice/mince dish and made pizza from scratch.

The girls set up for a dinner party – which is something they are very comfortable doing (also Home Ec)
