I was recently prompted to describe my ultimate escape plan.  This made me think of natural disasters, criminal activity or even society collapse – how was my family going to respond in any of those situations?  And though we have talked about some of those things and we have a plan to some degree, it is easy to put your trust in your ultimate escape plan.

Reality is, and I don’t want to be super-spiritual here with quick and not helpful platitudes, our ultimate escape plan is Jesus.  Not that he will zip us outta-here, but that he will be the one that supplies the wisdom, strength, courage to do what has to be done.

Most of the stuff that happens to my family hasn’t fallen within those big disasters – over the years they’ve been the everyday challenges –

  • Peter who travels for work which means he is not home for a ‘normal’ family life
  • Relational challenges with people you love
  • Going away to another town to have babies
  • Naomi and her tumor, treatment and ongoing complications
  • Living in a too-small space
  • Homeschooling and its challenges
  • Friends leaving town
  • Family living on the other side of the country

Now these things may be big or small to you but they have been part of my journey.  It is never about my journey’s tougher than your journey – these are the things that I have faced, and I’ve had to call out to Jesus to help me through.

What prepares me to face these situations with grace, strength, and joy?

I was reminded of the time when we had taken Naomi down to Perth with a lump in her ‘tummy’.  A friend said to me, “I hope you are reading your Bible”.  Now at that point I hadn’t had time to read my Bible and yet I felt that God was with me, undergirding and guiding us all.  An old family friend, who was spending the day with me said, “Belinda, your walk with God has prepared you for this moment.  Every day you’ve prayed, every Bible study, every devotion, every sermon, every lecture at Bible College, has prepared you for this moment.  You know where God is.”  She was so true, in the midst of concern, anxiety, uncertainly I knew where God was – he was with me, as he has promised to always be.

I could never have known what Nomi’s journey was going to be.  We don’t know the future, we aren’t to try and find out the future, instead we are to trust God.

So my ultimate escape plan is my relationship with Jesus.  The time that I invest into getting to know Him now will be what undergirds and directs us in any situation – big or small in the future.
