Early in the year as I was praying for each of my children I was very aware that Naomi needed stretching in the area of arts. She had said at one stage, the one thing that makes school look attractive is their drama programme. Well school wasn’t going to be an option so this was one of the things on my heart as I prayed about the coming new year.
As term 1 started we heard the news that the local Amateur Theatre group (KATS) was going to start a kids group. How about that! What an answer to prayer! So Naomi and Daniel joined Kitty Kats and enjoyed preparing for a variety show. They were both in the cast for a take-off of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. In term 2 they worked with theatre sports – impromptu drama though Daniel pulled out.
Term 3 and 4 was spent working on the musical “Oliver”. Naomi had to audition and won the part of Dodger. She loved it though it was a lot of work; practices 2-3 times a week for a few months. She also put her hand up to help with making a few costume pieces.
The reason I share this story – instead of just talking about Naomi’s fabulous performance (that is coming!) is because as I look at the opportunities my kids have, even in a small town, I thank God. Each of my children have had opportunities that have stretched and challenged and met their unique individual needs. And I believe that God can do that for you in your home town too!
Naomi did very well on stage – she kept in character with accent and actions. As the local newspaper put it, “Naomi Letchford exuded confidence and kept the audience entertained as the cheeky Artful Dodger”. We loved seeing her on stage – she shone – you could see she was loving every minute.
But the thing that has made our heart most proud is the reports that we keep hearing – from people we don’t even know – of how she conducted herself – her energy and enthusiasm carried and lifted others, how she connected with both the adults and the younger crew and from the director – she didn’t baulk at creative ideas, she always gave it a go. Well done Nomi and we look forward to seeing your next performance.
