Thursday is always a mixed up sort of day – people going in all sorts of directions. Joshua, Jacob and Hayley studied. Jessica and Naomi went to Mainly Music – they were on morning tea this week, but since yesterday was Jess’ birthday they had cooked ahead of time and had it in the freezer ready to go. Daniel works in the yard tidying things up – he cleaned up the water fountain, dragged palm fronds away, checked the lights and tidied up the cubby in readiness for Jessica’s birthday party.
Daniel and I spent a little time on the computer talking about his photo album. I then continued to scrap our photos while Daniel spent time researching stop motion animation.
Josh picked the girls up, and they did a few run around chores for me before coming home. After lunch Jess had another birthday call and set up her new laptop. Naomi spent the afternoon sewing. Late afternoon Jess and Hayley went for a long walk. The boys (all three of them) played a computer game all together which they really enjoyed.
Before dinner they cleaned up the family room, and designed another nurf gun war – this time they set up a more complicated battlements and decided on different rules. It was interesting listening to them all share their ideas and reasonings – the give and take of creating a game.
Once again dinner was about fantastic conversation – it started with reading about Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors – we talked about conforming to the world and how easy it is to delude ourselves that we are touching base with culture in order to reach them but in reality we are becoming more like them and losing our very message of hope. Then again what does it look like to be cross cultural – the old question of being in the world but not of it (though funnily enough that actual verse didn’t get mentioned). We also talked about being persuasive instead of just dogmatic . Character First describes persuasiveness as ‘guiding vital truths around another’s mental roadblocks.’ Once again we jumped from subject to subject, I can’t remember it all, though I do know each of us walked away with something to think about.
I excused everyone from the dishes – so they could fit in a war before bedtime….. the noises I hear coming from that room as I type, makes me think that it will take a while before any of them will be ready for sleep!!
In reflecting on today I don’t think anyone ‘learnt’ anything but it was more about confirming what our family is about – we find ways to be involved in things that help the community, we study and learn, we value creativity, we help each other, we talk about things, we read, and though we generally don’t fight – we do allow nurf wars!!
No photos today so I thought I’d include these two from Jess’ birthday yesterday. Completely out of the blue Nomi recognises that if you spell LIVE backwards you get EVIL – this tickled their fancy hence a photo shoot!
