I thought I would answer The Homeschool Classroom’s writing prompt:  What was my best homeschool moment recently?

Just the other day Daniel (my 4th child, 12year old) lay on his bed doing his writing (this in itself is a new habit – letting them do their writing on the bed – not sure about it but anyway…. I digress).  Daniel looked up at me as I walked in the room and I asked him what he was learning.  He said he was learning about strong verbs. Then he said “I’m really glad I’m learning this because I’m going to use it in my writing!”

On the one hand you could say, ‘well duh’ that is obviously why we learn about strong verbs – to improve our writing.  But the thing that made it a ‘best homeschool moment’ was that this was a connection that he came up with.  He saw an application for what he was learning.  This sure makes teaching verbs a lot easier.

As my daughter starts a sewing project she groans as I show her the math that is needed.  She asks if she can just make it.  I agree.  She comes back some time later, frustrated because it hasn’t worked out.  I prompt her to think about math.  The lightbulb goes on…. She understands now why she needs math.

The only way our children can find application for the things that they are learning is to be given time to live life, to get involved in projects and start doing stuff.

Our children need application for the math, language arts, science, history that we teach.  They need time and opportunity to find the application for the character traits we teach, the manners we expect, the social graces we mention.  Learning has to be more than head knowledge – it needs to be lived out.

Do you give your children enough time in their day to find application for all the things you teach them?
