We enjoy watching movies together as a family and find that often a well told story will stimulate great conversation afterwards. Here are our favourite Christmas DVDs – we’ve enjoyed these over the years – regardless of age, and they have raised great discussions.
Christmas with a Capital C tells the story of a town’s struggle to recognise Christ as the center of Christmas. This is top of our favourite list. It is based on my kids all time favourite Christmas song by Go Fish
I like seeing the Bible stories come to life – there is a sense of making it real. Rated PG.
A truly fun movie – but with a heart message – Christmas is about worshipping Christ, in all our situations. Rated G.
A story that makes you think about the gifts that God has given us and how we will honour him with them. Rated G.
There are two strong messages in this DVD (or picture book). First – it is a reminder of the connection between Christmas and Easter. Secondly – a heart message about worshipping God with who you are, and being content with God’s plan for you. Rated G
Watch it and talk about it
Whenever we watch a movie we have this conflict between simply enjoying the story and letting it impact our hearts and talking about it. We try and keep a balance so everything we watch isn’t dissected – one tip that helps with this is that we wait 24 hours or so before we talk about the heart-issues or topics the movie may have raised.
The easiest way to generate conversation after a movie is to simply ask a question and let everyone in your family have a say. The second tip is to get everyone to think of a 2nd question to follow up after an answer has been shared. This stops your family time from becoming a question and answer session with Mum or Dad asking the questions and instead creates a family conversation.
