Chores are the teaching ground for our children to have the life skills that they need to do well in life.  But our children don’t see it this way – they usually see chores as something imposed upon them for who knows what reason!  We need to give our children an understanding of the value of the household chores that need to be done, as well as an appreciation that chores are not just a thing of childhood, but they are a part of responsible living – whatever age you are.

Here are my top 10 tips for helping your kids do their chores

– Have a household maintenance routines – have a plan as to how you are going to keep your house tidy, clean and organised.

–Have times through the day that certain chores get done.  We have 3 chore times:  after breakfast, after lunch, before dinner.  (We also do dishes after dinner, and make our beds before breakfast!)

–Have the children work with you – don’t have them just hanging around while you do the work – but get them to do an easy chore – you do the harder.  Train them in all the tasks so eventually they can do it by themselves.

–Training is required – they need to be told what to do, shown what to do, supervised while they practice, and then given the full responsibility but with being held accountable.

–Check up on your kids – check that the job is done well; don’t rely on their assessment.  By checking and making them redo it to your standard they learn excellence and what it means to complete a job.

–Have realistic expectations.  How long does it really take, and what is a realistic standard of clean/tidy/organised.    Be real but aim for excellence (not perfection).

–Give the children a weekly roster on the same job – this gives them time to consolidate their skills and they start to pick up responsibility for it.  But they don’t get bored as they switch chores next week.

–A weekly roster also gives them the opportunity to just go and do it because they know what they need to do instead of waiting for your instruction.   Initiative vs. Obedience

–Be definitive on what chores need to be done and don’t keep giving “one more job”.  This takes away all motivation to work fast.  Either work on a defined list of tasks or work for a defined amount of time – either way the kids need to know what is expected of them from the outset.

–Work as a family – this is something that you all do because you all live in the house.
