As I read this business coaching blog I couldn’t help but see the implications for parents
Quote: Delegation helps develop employees, build team capacity, and free managers to work on key corporate initiatives. Yet many of us still choose to hold on to work that others can do.
Our role as parent is to teach and train our children to be skilled and efficient at a range of life skills. If we keep on doing the things that they can do (or could do) then they will not gain enough practice in order to be skilled or efficient.
Delegation means to give someone else the responsibility for completing a task. There is nothing more frustrating than to be given a task and then to have the ‘authority figure’ hanging over your shoulder watching, directing and correcting your every move. You either have responsibility for the task or you don’t. The balance between delegation and responsibility comes with accountability.
If we delegate a task to our children then we need to step back and allow them to take responsibility for it, but we also need to expect them to be accountable to us. This means they need to follow our instructions (which may be specific or general), and they need to report back (or if it is a long term project, they need to stay in touch regarding progress.)
It is easy to hover over our children and not let them fly with the things that we have taught them to do. If they have been trained properly, and if their heart is in the right place, then we need to delegate: give them the responsibility.
A second quote that struck me was:
Quote: If you are doing something somebody else can do, it is keeping you from doing the things only you can do.
If you are doing something that somebody (read your children) can do, it is keeping you from doing the things only you can do. Only you can do the training, only you can capture your child’s heart. If our family works together as a team, as the older children gain skill and competence, they can take over some of the daily responsibilities leaving you more time for the management and training of your household.
Are you delegating to your children?
Are you giving them responsibilities?
Are you clear on what is important for only you to do?
