Part of the dominion mandate that God instilled at creation was that we are to be good stewards of all that we have. It is therefore important that we learn to look after our possessions, time, and money.
And yet it has always been on my heart that my children don’t learn these life skills in order to be independent and simply look after themselves. Instead, they learn these skills so they can look after other people. At every turn God wants us to be other focused.
We need to match our ability to do practical things with a genuine love for others – a love based on the fact that Jesus loves these people even more than we can. Doing things for people without a love for them is just being a noisy gong – as it says in 1 Corinthians 13:1.
If we are aware, available, and discerning we will see needs all around us. We then need the courage to step outside our comfort zone to meet those needs. Knowing what to do is no good to anyone unless we actually go and do it!
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10
I am writing 31 days of Heart Conversations to document 31 important truths I want to make sure I pass onto my children. Is today’s topic something you want to talk to your kids about? Do it today! Your words may well be different than mine but these truths will shape our children’s lives forever.
