If the Bible truly is the Word of God (and I believe it is) then we need to know what it says.  We can read the Bible for our personal devotions – to encourage us in our daily walk but the Bible also says we are to renew our minds:

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world,

but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—

His good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

Not only is our spirit encouraged, strengthened and renewed when we read the Word of God but so is our mind.  If we let it!  In order for the Word of God to change our thinking we need to read it, we need to ponder on it, we need to know it, we need to pray about it.

Are we showing our children this important aspect of following God?  Bible study isn’t something just old people do – it isn’t something that gets done in a group, at church.  Bible Study should be an individual thing – should be a family thing – should be the body of Christ thing.  We all need to start studying the Word of God, growing in our understanding of the things that are important to God.  We need to show our children that Bible study is a way of life, we need to show our children how to study and learn from the Bible.

Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians,

for they received the message with great eagerness

and examined the Scriptures every day

to see if what Paul said was true.

Acts 17:11

These people were keen to hear this new message but they also knew their Scriptures so they studied to make sure things lined up.  One thing that concerns Peter and I greatly about the world that our children live in is the blatant rejection of Biblical truth all around them.  Our children need to know what the Bible says about everything and anything.   They begin to make these connections as they become familiar with the whole content of the Bible.  This means study.

Do you study the Bible yourself?

Do you study the Bible with your children?

Or do you just have devotional readings?

We need both!
