We have had amazing nature experiences in our own back yard.  One afternoon one of the kids found an echidna on our veranda.  Though we knew they lived out in the bush we had never seen one so this was very very exciting.  Pete picked it up (armed with thick gloves).  Much to the kids delight it “widdled” on Pete!  Pete was just thankful it didn’t express its nervousness in a more “solid” way!!!  We tied up our dog, and placed the echidna in the fallen leaves in our garden – the next day she had disappeared so now we wonder if she has a family somewhere close by in the bush block next door.

A few days later Peter found a nest of baby Blue Tongue Lizards.  This was also very exciting.  There were 6 baby lizards and a mother.  (Or at least we presume it was the mother not the father with the babies.)  Later in the week our pipes burst and since their nest was under the pipes they got flooded out.  By the time we found the busted pipe we found 3 lizards as they were escaping, the mother and 3 other lizards seem to have found safe ground before we got there, as they weren’t either in the nest or in the water.  We were amazed at how aggressive the babies were when we were trying to “help” them – I guess they could help themselves really.  We got a good close up look-see of their blue tongues.

And today, yet another amazing nature experience – Joshua found a snake that had been run over and brought its dried body to the house for us all to see.  It hadn’t happened too long ago as there was still flesh on the snake but at the same time it was partially dehydrated out.  Just as we were about to throw it into the garden Pete noticed something very interesting – more interesting than the snake itself.  In the snake’s mouth was the remains of a mouse – also dried out but you could easily see its back legs and long tail.  So when the snake got run over, it was eating dinner of mouse!  Amazing!
