I was talking to a new homeschool mum this morning and she was wondering if she would ever fit this homeschool thing.  It got me to thinking of my beginnings.

My mum and I often chuckle over the “Belinda” I have become – trust me, there was no evidence of this “Belinda” back then!  I remember when Josh was about three and the Child Health Nurse was concerned about his speaking – his lack of vocab.  She asked me, or rather made a presumption that I talked to him.  Well, sure I talked to him but what did she mean?  Her example was along the lines of saying, “Wow, Josh, look at that red car!” when we were down town.  I thought that just plain ridiculous, artificial and I was sure that conversation like that did not happen between Josh and I!  Neither was it going to!!  (Now I talk to the kids all the time, coming and going, conversation is a big part of our learning.)

I am a mum who takes the “Go away and play” line.  I have been like that right from the start and there are benefits with that, namely that the kids do go off and play!  But the challenges start to arise when you have a heart for discipling your children.  Discipleship is all about, “Come, be with me, join in with my life!”

Isn’t God just great – he sure has pulled a swifty on me!

It is easy to box yourself and therefore give yourself excuses.  I’m a Sanguine and therefore I like being around people all the time, I couldn’t stay at home all week.  I’m too arty to be tied to a routine.  I am not patient enough to be with my children.  I like working by myself.  I don’t think to talk my thoughts to my children.  I’ve never read a chapter book aloud!

If it is important to your family then you can become a student of …. And learn another way!

God knew what our family needed, He knew what path He intended for our family and He has given me everything I need to be a part of that.  He knew the changes I would have to make and He knew that I could do it – with His help of course.
