I was listening to a presentation by Gary Ezzo the other day and he was talking about teaching our children virtues. He then defined the difference between values and virtues. I found this particularly interesting since the government talks a lot about values education.
He defined the difference as – values being what can change from generation to generation and even from culture to culture. He defined virtues as non-changing.
I thought this was excellent and my mind immediately went to stereotyped – typical teenage conflicts such as loud music, clothing and hairstyles. Values change from generation to generation. But my thinking didn’t stop there – if there is a underpinning principle from God’s word, command of Jesus’, ie a virtue, that affects this value then the virtue has a higher place in our lives.
We must know what the Bible has to say about all aspects of our life, what is the scriptural reason for doing things. Are the things we stand for values or are they virtues (as defined by the Word of God).
