The other morning I was reading how God has empowered us to go out and demonstrate how His Kingdom works. This got me to thinking and wondering how does God want me to show his Kingdom here on earth? The only answer I came up with was My Family.
So how does Gods Kingdom show itself in my family? What is the Kingdom anyway? The scriptures say for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. (Rom 14:17) Now theres some words for thought
This is my thought process
- God has empowered me to show His kingdom on earth
- His Kingdom is righteousness, peace and joy
- Is this what the world sees in my family is it what I see in my family?
If I am to show the face of Gods Kingdom (Gods Ways, Gods Victory, Gods Character etc) then I need to have righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost in my family. These three words can be a wonderful measuring stick for the spirit of our families.
Do I have a cheerful outlook on life, do I have a calm delight for my days, can I rejoice daily for my children, because of my children and with my children?
Do I have a spirit of peace and well being in my home, is there quietness and rest and harmony as we all live together adults and children?
Is there an obvious standard of righteousness in our home, is everyones (adults and childrens) character and actions guided by what Jesus puts forward as righteous, is there judgment and punishment along with restoration as everyone strives for righteous living? Is this seen in my home?
If I can say yes, then the Kingdom on God is in our home. But for me it is a yes qualified by sometimes, most times or getting there! And this is fine by God too as long as we are getting there with the Holy Ghost. All these things need to be done in the Holy Ghost, that is, in the power of the Holy Ghost. Not by our own determination or ability, or organization, or knowledge but by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
At the end of the day we can feel totally exhausted and we look back on the day and have to admit there has been no joy in being with our children today. When asked why we would have to say that it was a hectic day where nothing went according to plan, where the noise level was incredible, where there was constant tension between all family members (this sounds like no peace!). The next question we would have to ask ourselves is Was there Righteousness in my home today?
Ouch! Maybe I let my morning readings slip by as I squeezed 10minutes extra on the computer, maybe I let the first squabble go unattended, maybe I accepted a commitment that was against my husbands better judgment, maybe I had some questionable music playing too loud for too long? Where is my righteous behaviour gone? It is not in the home and my childrens behaviour is just following the example set in front of them. We need righteousness in our homes and peace will be its fruit. We need peace in our homes and joy will be its fruit. And the Holy Ghost is there for us to help us in these areas.
Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. To follow this means to pursue these things at great cost, even persecution, we are to press towards these things which bring peace. Am I prepared to change in order to bring peace into my home? What things do I need to pursue for peace in my home?
This scripture also states that we are also to follow those things which edify which will build a building of great structure, build a family, a home. I believe that this is not just as Christians fellowshipping together but even in our own homes. We are to follow those things which will build a great family and a great home. I believe that those tools are mentioned in the previous verse righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.
